ITIL AI Governance (Version 5)

Course Duration: 3 days, 9am-6pm

(We offer flexible learning options — online, instructor-led, hybrid — to fit your learning style)

The ITIL® AI Governance (Version 5) course gives professionals and organisations the practical capability to govern AI responsibly, effectively, and at scale. As AI moves from experimentation to becoming the default way organisations create value, this course helps candidates build a holistic understanding of AI governance — combining proven governance principles with practical, role-aligned guidance to manage AI with clarity, accountability, and trust.

Built on the globally trusted ITIL framework, the course introduces the ITIL AI Capability Model, the ITIL AI Governance Model, and the ITIL AI Governance Improvement Model, giving participants a structured way to assess AI risk, design proportionate controls, and embed oversight without slowing innovation down. Participants will learn how to establish clear decision authority and accountability for AI across functions, balance innovation, ethics and compliance, and keep people in meaningful control of AI outcomes.

The course also builds a common language for governing AI across teams — spanning product and service management, DevOps, strategy, HR, marketing, finance and operations — so that organisations can scale AI responsibly and turn ambition into measurable, sustainable value. Real-world scenarios are used throughout to help participants recognise Shadow AI risk, stress-test existing governance against AI use cases, and design adjustments that hold up under regulatory and operational pressure.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to apply the ITIL AI Governance Model end-to-end — from assessing current governance readiness, through designing and implementing proportionate controls, to maintaining and continually improving AI governance as regulation, suppliers and AI capability evolve.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand key ITIL concepts including the ITIL Value System, the Four Dimensions, and the ITIL Maturity Model, and how they relate to AI
  • Describe the differences among corporate governance, IT governance, and AI governance, and how governance differs from management
  • Understand different types of AI (GenAI, Agentic AI, Narrow AI), their characteristics, and their use cases across the ITIL product and service lifecycle
  • Describe key AI risks, including bias, hallucination, opacity, data privacy, and Shadow AI, and the ethical principles that guide responsible AI design and operation
  • Apply the ITIL AI Capability Model (the “6C” model — Creation, Curation, Clarification, Cognition, Communication, Coordination) to identify high-risk areas and propose proportionate governance controls
  • Understand the four AI governance perspectives — Decision Authority & Risk Management, Ethical Principles, Data Governance, and Regulatory Compliance — and why they are interdependent
  • Explain the four AI governance patterns (Directive, Guided, Federated, Autonomous) and how they affect authority, oversight, and decision-making
  • Apply the ITIL AI Governance Improvement Model across its four steps — Assess, Design, Implement, and Maintain — to design and embed governance adjustments
  • Understand how global and national AI regulation shapes governance requirements, controls, and assurance evidence
  • Apply governance design, risk-matrix reasoning, and ethical principles to realistic, scenario-based situations

By completing this course, you will:

  • Gain the ability to govern AI responsibly and at scale, from initial risk assessment to ongoing assurance.
  • Build a practical, structured approach to balancing AI innovation with ethics, trust, and compliance.
  • Strengthen your ability to identify and manage AI risks such as bias, hallucination, model drift, and Shadow AI.
  • Develop the confidence to design proportionate governance controls rather than one-size-fits-all restrictions.
  • Improve your credibility with stakeholders by demonstrating clear AI oversight, accountability, and transparency.
  • Position yourself for emerging AI governance roles across product, service, operations, and transformation.
  • Help your organisation adopt and scale AI with confidence, trust, and reduced regulatory and reputational risk.
